If for some reason you cannot download a client, or you can't get any downloaded client to connect to the channel, you can use the webclient. From your web browser, you can use the green "Start" button on the Yay for Queers main page to get connected. This should be used only by those who are unable to download and install a client, or who can't get their client to connect for some reason.
What's a client?
(Skip this if you're not interested.)

Little known fact: People don't connect to each other online the way most people think they do. If you and I are PMing on Facebook, our computers aren't directly connected to each other. There's more than just your computer and mine involved in sending our messages back and forth. There's also the Facebook server - a big computer that acts as a middleman. I send a PM, the server gets it and passes it on, and then you receive it. This all happens very very fast (depending on the speed of the server and the speed of your and my internet connections), but the point is that you have to connect to a service on another computer in order to message someone.

A client is anything you run on your computer that accesses a service. Messaging apps like Facebook Messenger, Skype, and Yahoo Messenger are clients, because the program on your computer accesses the messenger service through the internet and lets you talk to other people.

Okay. Moving on.

Voice/Video Chat
If your computer has working sound and you have a microphone, you can voice chat, and if you have a working webcam you can also video chat!

We use Google Hangouts. You need to have a Google account. If you have an account on Gmail, YouTube, Google+, or any other Google-owned site, you already have a Google account; just go to http://mail.google.com/ to set up your Gmail or http://plus.google.com/ to set up your Google+. If you don't already have a Google account, you can create one at http://mail.google.com/ or http://plus.google.com/.

If you're using an iOS mobile device (iPhone, iPad, etc.) to chat, you need to install Google Hangouts via the app store.

If you're using an Android mobile device to chat, Hangouts should already be installed. If you can't find it, install it from the Play Store.

If you're using a computer to chat, you need to install the Google voice and video chat plugin on your computer. You can download it here. Follow these steps to install it:

Get Google+ usernames from people in the IRC channel and add them to your Google+ circles, and/or get their Gmail addresses and add them to your Gmail contacts. Then you can start a hangout with them!

Come to the IRC channel if you need any help!
